IES files are usually opened and viewed with the use of Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013, an application mostly used by designers and architects. Since they deal mainly with lighting and photometry data, many 3D programs use this file format as well as most lighting manufacturers publish this file format.

Aside from that, IES files are also useful for the examination of light source illumination for outdoor sites like roadways, etc. These files save the light quantities and measurements, which is why they are useful for the simulation of lighting systems before they are installed in buildings. Data files that are created using the standardized IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) photometric format are called IES files which is why IES files are deemed IES Photometric Data Files.
